Should we teach drama in schools ?

Ed Simpson, 22 September 2012

Questions that were raised:

Is it just taught badly?

Should acting skills only be taught in Drama Schools like Doctors?

Should we teach transferable skills in there own right?

Is it too easy to join the class?

Is it too easy to do well?

Why not teach culture studies and acting separately

Why not go down the sport route and take it out of the schools?

Why not teach it well instead or is there a deeper problem?

If you study performance you are not a performer

Is there a clash between theatre studies and the theatre world?

We need both the actor and the person who studies theatre to make the world go around but they are different.

We need idea people and people who can express them in a performance, they could be the same person.

Is school about getting a job or getting a life ?

Should Drama become culture studies and leave acting to the drama clubs, youth theatres and drama schools?

We did not reach an answer but went away with more questions.
